In a shocking incident, an 18-year-old son of a poor farmer was allegedly beaten up by his professor for not wearing his uniform. Sagar Warpe, a first year student of the Industrial Training Institute (ITI), in Aundh faced the wrath of Anil Shendkar and sustained head injuries and scars on his left hand. Shendkar teaches painting at the institute.
"I have just one uniform. Since it had gone for a wash, I wore regular clothes to college. My professor got angry when he saw me and started beating me with a big wooden compass," said Sagar. In fact, Sagar was so shaken up after the incident that he was hesitant about lodging a police complaint. However, on the insistence of a classmate, he lodged a complaint at the Chaturshingi police station. Inspector Anil Kadam, (Crime) said, "A complaint was lodged after we persuaded the boy to speak. We have warned the teacher, who has admitted to the mistake and assured it won't be repeated."
Sagar travels from Shirur, a 150-minute journey, to his college every day. The ITI is a government institution designed to teach basic skills in specified trades. It was in the news three months ago for leaking question papers.
